That spring shouldn't be on the TB, but rather on the center linkage. The hook end goes on a stationary post and the other side either hooks to the bell-crank or possible a through-hole on the shaft I can't remember which. If it still feels excessively weak then try pre-loading it before you hook it to the post. It took me a few tries to re-assemble everything right, but there is no reason that the mild heat (< 400F) would hurt it, nor would the mild bend hurt it either.
